Why Arch Cape, Oregon Feels Different From Cannon Beach

Arch Cape, Oregon is a small unincorporated community on Highway 101, about ten minutes south of Cannon Beach and roughly fifteen minutes north of Manzanita. It has no downtown, no parking hunt, and no line for anything. What it has instead is forested headland, open Pacific Ocean, and a long beach that most travelers drive right past. The ones who stop tend to come back.

Location matters here. Portland is about 90 minutes away by car, which makes Arch Cape an easy weekend trip. Ecola State Park lies north beyond Cannon Beach, and Oswald West State Park, home to Short Sand Beach, begins just south of town. Arch Cape is the quiet stretch of Oregon Coast between two of the region’s most visited parks.

Walking Arch Cape Beach, Oregon at Low Tide

Arch Cape beach runs for about 2.5 miles along the base of the headlands, with rock formations framing the view in both directions. There is no Haystack Rock pulling tour buses off the highway, so a weekday morning walk here often feels private. Low tide exposes tide pools worth kneeling beside, and winter storms leave driftwood piled along the upper beach.

Our favorite plan is also the simplest. Bring a thermos of coffee, walk until you feel like turning around, and walk back.

The Low Tide Walk Between Arch Cape and Hug Point

Head north at low tide and you reach Hug Point, where wheel ruts from the original stagecoach road are still visible in the rock. Pioneers had to hug the headland to get around it, which is how the point earned its name. Sea caves line the south side of the headland, and a seasonal waterfall spills onto the sand nearby.

Hug Point closed in November 2025 after erosion damaged its beach access, and Oregon State Parks reopened the site in September 2026. A long-term fix is still unfunded, so check the Oregon State Parks page and a current tide table before you go. The rocks around the point are passable only at low tide.

Arch Cape also connects to the Oregon Coast Trail. Heading south, the trail climbs over the Arch Cape headland toward Cape Falcon in Oswald West State Park, a forested route that continues on to Short Sand Beach.

Arch Cape Lodging Designed for Couples

Arch Cape Inn & Retreat is an adults-only bed and breakfast built in the style of a European château. It sits on the forested side of Highway 101, a short walk from Arch Cape beach. Guest rooms have gas fireplaces, and several add soaking tubs and ocean views. The Tower Room, on the top floor, wraps its sitting area in a ring of windows that face the evening sunset.

A gourmet breakfast is included each morning. It is served café style from 8:00 to 9:45 a.m., with four sweet and savory choices, in a dining room overlooking the back gardens. In summer, you can take your plate out to the garden patio or the front deck.

Our advice to guests rarely changes: stay in Arch Cape and visit Cannon Beach for the afternoon. Dinner, galleries, and Haystack Rock are ten minutes up the road, and the quiet is waiting when you return.
