Fall Getaways in Wisconsin: An Owl Ridge Weekend
Why Wausau Is Made for Fall Getaways in Wisconsin
Fall getaways in Wisconsin tend to center on the same handful of things: color, cool air, and a good reason to stay outside longer than usual. Wausau delivers all three. October here brings hillsides that shift from green to gold and rust, mornings cool enough for a jacket, and afternoons still mild enough to spend on a trail or a patio. It’s the kind of stretch that makes autumn in Wisconsin worth planning a trip around, rather than just noticing on the drive to work.
Wisconsin weather in October runs mild by day and sharp by night. Wausau typically sees highs near 56 degrees and lows around 37, with an early dusting of snow always a possibility. That swing is part of the appeal. A sunny hike in the afternoon can turn into a fire-lit evening within a few hours, which is exactly the rhythm a good fall getaway should have.
Fall Things to Do in Wisconsin Near Wausau
A few outings define fall things to do in Wisconsin around Wausau, and most of them are within a short drive of downtown. Here are some ideas for fall getaways in Wisconsin.
Granite Peak runs a scenic chairlift up Rib Mountain during peak color season, weather permitting, and it’s worth reserving ahead since fall weekends fill quickly. Rib Mountain State Park itself is a strong option for anyone who’d rather take the color in on foot, with an observation tower that opens up wide views across the Wisconsin River valley. For a ride instead of a hike, Nine Mile Forest offers wooded mountain bike trails southwest of the city, while the Mountain Bay State Trail begins nearby in Weston and follows a former railroad corridor through the countryside.
If you’d rather stay behind the wheel, Highway 107 north toward Merrill tracks the Wisconsin River through wooded terrain, with Grandfather Falls worth a stop along the way. And downtown Wausau covers the rest: a stop at Timekeeper Distillery, a local brewery, dinner at one of the area’s better restaurants, or an afternoon at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, where the Birds in Art exhibition runs September 12, 2026, through January 3, 2027, with free admission.
Fall festivals in Wisconsin add another reason to time a visit around October. Wausau’s Harvest Fest takes over the 400 Block on October 3, 2026, with pumpkins, food vendors, and family activities, while Boos and Booze brings an adults-only Halloween night to the Rothschild Pavilion on October 23.
A Home Base for Your Fall Getaway
After a day outside, Owl Ridge Cabin gives you somewhere to enjoy your evening and is one of the best parts of fall getaways in Wisconsin. Set on a private, five-acre wooded lot about ten minutes from downtown Wausau, the cabin was built for couples, with 1,100 square feet split between an open living, dining, and kitchen space, a king bedroom, and a spa-inspired bathroom with a steam shower and an oversized soaking tub. Heated floors and a fireplace make the cooler October nights part of the experience rather than something to plan around.
For a fall getaway with a bit more occasion, Owl Ridge offers a Culinary Experience, where a local chef prepares and serves a four-course dinner for two at the cabin with wine chosen for the season, along with add-on touches like roses, chocolates, and sparkling wine for an anniversary or birthday. Owl Ridge is the sister property of the Stewart Inn in downtown Wausau, so if you’re weighing Wisconsin cabin rentals against a boutique hotel stay, both options put you close to the same fall color and the same city.
Book your stay at Owl Ridge Cabin and build your own version of a Wisconsin fall weekend, whether that means hiking Rib Mountain in the morning or simply staying in by the fire.

Romantic Cabins in Wisconsin: How to Choose a Secluded Cabin for Two
How to Choose Romantic Cabins in Wisconsin
The best romantic cabins in Wisconsin give couples real privacy without cutting them off from good food and things to do Wausau. Some cabins sit so far from town that dinner out takes real planning, while others sit a few yards from neighboring rentals. This guide covers what to look for, how to match a cabin to the occasion, and when to go. For ideas beyond cabins, see these romantic getaways in Wisconsin.
What Makes a Cabin Romantic
Privacy comes first. A cabin surrounded by trees can still share a driveway or a view with neighboring units, so ask how many rentals sit on the property. Romantic secluded cabins in Wisconsin earn the description when you can sit on the deck without seeing another guest.
Comfort matters as much as scenery. After a cold hike, heated floors, a steam shower, and a deep soaking tub do more for a weekend than rustic charm.
Space changes the trip. A separate bedroom, living area, and dining table make a two- or three-night stay feel very different from a single hotel room.
The kitchen should work. If you plan to cook together, look for a full-size refrigerator, a real range, and quality cookware rather than a kitchenette.
Location matters, too. A good private cabin retreat keeps restaurants, trails, and a theater within a short drive, so leaving the woods is a choice rather than a project.
Owl Ridge: A Private Romantic Cabin Near Wausau
Owl Ridge Cabin sits on a wooded lot about 10 minutes from downtown Wausau and is designed for two adults, with no children or pets. The contemporary design draws on Frank Lloyd Wright, and floor-to-ceiling windows frame the woods from the living room and bedroom. Inside are a king bed, a gas fireplace, heated floors, and a spa bathroom with a 4-by-6.5-foot steam shower and an oversized soaking tub for two. The full kitchen includes a full-size refrigerator, gas range, and dishwasher, and stays have no multi-night minimum.

Matching the Cabin to the Occasion
For anniversary trip ideas, plan the weekend around one memorable evening. The Owl Ridge Culinary Experience brings a local chef to the cabin for a candlelit four-course dinner for two, with two bottles of wine selected to match a custom seasonal menu planned weeks in advance.
A honeymoon cabin gives newlyweds privacy that a hotel cannot. The Romeo and Juliet Experience adds a 90-minute on-site couples massage, a bottle of Chandon, homemade chocolate truffles, and a 2 p.m. check-in with a noon checkout.
A babymoon in Wisconsin calls for a lighter schedule. Heated floors, the fireplace, and a kitchen for easy meals make it simple to plan a weekend with few commitments.
Some of the best couples getaway ideas need no occasion at all. A spontaneous getaway for two can be as simple as a bottle of wine, dinner in downtown Wausau, and a slow morning watching the woods. For a spa cabin getaway, the steam shower, soaking tub, and an on-site massage offer the core of a spa weekend without leaving the property.

When and Where to See the Best Wisconsin Fall Colors
Why Wausau Is a Top Spot for Wisconsin Fall Colors
Wisconsin fall colors begin appearing in late September and often peak during the first half of October. Around Wausau, the Wisconsin River valley comes alive with brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, making it one of the best places in the state to experience autumn. Here is what to expect, when to visit, and where to find the area’s most spectacular views.
Wisconsin fall colors bring most visitors here, but fall offers much more than beautiful scenery. The crisp air is made for hiking, and the summit of Rib Mountain State Park becomes one of the finest overlooks in the state, with miles of color rolling out below the quartzite bluffs. Beyond the leaves, there is no shortage of things to do in Wausau in October. Our guests spend their afternoons sampling the best Wausau breweries, booking tables at our favorite local restaurants, and packing binoculars for the birding spots near our cabin, where fall migration brings warblers and waterfowl through the river valley.
After adventuring through the fall foliage, you will want to return to cozy lodging. Owl Ridge Cabin sits minutes from every spot in this guide, close enough that you can catch the morning light at one park and still be back for a slow afternoon on the patio. Of all the cabins in Wisconsin you could book for a fall getaway, few put you this close to the color itself.
The Best Places to Experience Wisconsin Fall Colors
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Travel Wisconsin track fall color progression each year. Central Wisconsin usually reaches its peak fall colors during the first half of October, though the exact timing depends on the weather. Check the Wisconsin fall color report before your trip, and use Travel Wisconsin’s county-by-county Wisconsin fall color map to follow conditions in Marathon County. Updated throughout the season by local observers, it is one of the most reliable ways to time your visit.
One of the best things about seeing Wisconsin fall colors from Wausau is the variety. You can ride a scenic chairlift above the trees, hike through hardwood forests, photograph river gorges, or spend a quiet afternoon beside a reservoir, all within about 30 minutes of the cabin. If you are hoping to catch the peak fall colors Wisconsin is known for, here is where to go:
- Rib Mountain State Park. Start here. The ancient quartzite ridge rises above the surrounding landscape, and from the top of the 60-foot observation tower, the color stretches to the horizon, with the Wisconsin River winding through forests of red, orange, and gold. The park offers more than 13 miles of hiking trails through hardwood forest, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to experience fall colors in Wisconsin from different elevations. It is a day-use park, and a Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required.
- Granite Peak fall chairlift rides. If you would rather ride than climb, Granite Peak fall chairlift rides operate on select Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the fall foliage season, carrying visitors above the canopy to one of the highest lift-served viewpoints in Wisconsin. Hop off at the top, wander Rib Mountain State Park, and ride back down. Peak weekends sell out, especially Saturdays, so it is worth reserving tickets in advance.
- Dells of the Eau Claire. About 25 minutes east of Wausau, the Dells of the Eau Claire is one of Marathon County’s most dramatic natural areas. Here, the Eau Claire River cuts through ancient volcanic rock beneath a colorful tree canopy. A section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail passes through the park, and the pedestrian bridge spanning the gorge provides one of the area’s most photographed fall views.
- Council Grounds State Park. Just west of Merrill, Council Grounds State Park trades dramatic overlooks for quiet beauty. Trails wind through the old-growth white pines of Krueger Pines State Natural Area along the Wisconsin River, and the evergreen backdrop makes the surrounding hardwoods stand out even more. It is one of central Wisconsin’s hidden gems for peak fall colors Wisconsin visitors often overlook.
- Big Eau Pleine County Park. Southwest of Wausau near Mosinee, Big Eau Pleine County Park is an excellent place for an evening walk or sunset picnic. Hardwood forests surround the reservoir, and calm water often reflects the brilliant reds and golds of autumn. If you are looking to experience fall colors in Wisconsin away from the crowds, this is one of the area’s best-kept secrets.

With the Wisconsin River cutting through town and forested hills rising nearby, you can pivot from lake edges to hardwood canopy to wide-open marsh in a single day. It’s what makes Wausau one of the best birding spots in Wisconsin. Expect Bald Eagles overhead, flashes of Scarlet Tanagers in the trees, and the unmistakable calls of Sandhill Cranes from wetland habitat.
Start your adventure at Bluegill Bay County Park on Lake DuBay, an easy spot for raptors, loons, and waterfowl during spring movement. Then trade shoreline for elevation at Rib Mountain State Park, where mature hardwood forest and big lookout points help you catch migrating songbirds and seasonal hawk activity. If you want quieter, longer walks, Nine Mile County Forest brings deep-woods birding with mixed stands that can reward patient listening and careful scanning, representing one of the best birding spots in Wisconsin.
For a higher species count, head to another of the best birding spots in Wisconsin, Big Eau Pleine County Park. Here, reservoir shoreline, brushy fields, and wooded pockets bring cranes, herons, bluebirds, and migrating ducks. Nearby, Big Eau Pleine Woods State Natural Area protects rare bottomland forest and wetland habitat, a prime choice if you’re hoping for specialized woodland and wetland birds. Serious birders should also carve out time for the George W. Mead State Wildlife Area, a cornerstone for birding in Wisconsin thanks to its sweeping marsh and grassland habitat. Dewey Marsh State Natural Area adds classic sedge meadow birding, and Rookery Park on Lake Wausau offers a memorable chance to observe colonial waterbirds during the breeding season.
Between outings, add a cultural stop that pairs perfectly with your birding adventure. The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum brings a fresh angle to Wisconsin birdwatching, pairing field sightings with global, bird, and nature-inspired work. It’s fascinating, and also one of the top things to do in Wausau each year.
